During February and March, embroidery artist Aubrey Longley-Cook will lead a 4-week cross stitch workshop hosted by WonderRoot and Barbara Archer Gallery. Participants will learn the basics of cross stitch embroidery, while working together to create an embroidered animation of RuPaul from footage of “Supermodel,” a song and video that RuPaul released in 1992. Along with an introduction to the basics of cross stitch and contemporary embroidery, the workshop will include guest drag appearances, screenings of experimental animations, and discussions of web art and GIF culture.

Each participant will be assigned an individual template based on footage from the video and will be responsible for the creation of one of the cross stitch frames. The group will work together to choose a color palette for the frames. The embroideries will animate and loop when composited together. There will be two animations created from the project. One will document the front view of the frames and one of the back.

The frames along with the animations will be displayed as part of Longley-Cook's upcoming show Serving Face.  The embroideries will be framed for the show, and all participating artists will be credited for their work. The frames will be returned to the participants after the show.

Workshop Hours: February 20th, February 27th, March 6th, and March 13th from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

All materials will be provided. No cross stitch experience required. Register here.

This project is supported in part through an investment from Idea Capital, a community-based pool of funds created by and for the Atlanta arts community.
